You are so sweet to send me a note! We have a digital SLR - a Canon Rebel XTi. I love it! I am now addicted to taking pics and took a class to learn more about it. Looking forward to taking more classes - bc now I know just enough to mess-up 90% of my pictures by not being on auto - ha! I don't have the kit lens (18-55mm) - long story. Ended-up with a 28-135mm zoom which was great in the beginning but is slow when taking pictures on manual. I'm not sure what to do about that for the future - thought it might be good for sports, but I just don't know. For now, I mostly use a Canon EF 50mm 1.4. It is a fixed lens - no zooming in or out and the lowest aperature setting is 1.4. It's got great reviews and is a standard portrait lens. The 50mm 1.8 is about 1/4-1/3 the cost, so it might be worth checking out. You may also want to try renting a lens from a shop before buying - to make sure you like it.
